This episode of the EMSEduCast focused on responding to a listener question about the differences in training levels and skills between Canada’s Primary Care Paramedic and the US EMT Basic. The conversation was initiated by a question asked in the EMSEduCast Facebook page. Please continue the conversation on Facebook, ask more questions there, and suggest topics for future shows.

Something Greg said midway through this podcast really grabbed my attention. He mentioned that often times EMS Education is driven by the needs of the provider, not the needs of the patient.
This hit home for me. I am a new EMS educator trying to reform and update a dysfunctional training division. My vision is to focus on training that fosters skills for better patient outcomes, not just training that fills in a slot on a recertification form. However, this has been a bit of a struggle. Some of our field providers seem to want a “refresher” flavor of training. They want to sit in a classroom for X number of hours and know that their National Registry is taken care of. Beyond that, it’s like, “Don’t talk to me about training, I’ve already got all my CE’s for my next recert.”
Granted this isn’t all of our providers, just the vocal minority. How would you guys suggest helping them to shift their mindset to patient needs above provider needs?

Brian, welcome to EMS education and thanks for listening to archived shows. Episode 101 which will post around May 6 or 7 explores the topic of “Why won’t they learn”. We discuss strategies and activities to engage with adult learners. Let us know if that is helpful.
